A move is one of the most significant events in your life. But with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be a stressful adventure. In this article, we share 10 practical tips that thousands of movers have already helped.
1. Start planning early
Begin preparations at least 6 to 8 weeks before your move date. The earlier you start, the less stress on the actual moving day. Create a schedule with weekly goals: which tasks need to be done when?
2. Create a moving budget
Set a realistic budget in advance. Consider costs for the moving company, packing materials, possible storage, and unexpected expenses. A rule of thumb: budget 10% extra above your estimate for unforeseen costs.
3. Declutter before packing
Less stuff means fewer boxes, less weight, and lower moving costs. Go through each room and ask yourself: do I still need this? Sell, donate, or discard what you no longer need. Many people save 20 to 30% on their moving costs this way.
4. Get quotes in good time
Compare at least three moving companies. Don’t just look at price, but also at insurance, experience, and reviews. Always request a site visit so the moving company can make a realistic assessment. At De Verhuizing, we do this free of charge and without obligation.
5. Label everything by room
Write on each box which room the contents belong to and what’s inside. Use coloured stickers per room. This saves an enormous amount of time when unpacking in your new home.
6. Pack an emergency kit
Pack a separate bag or suitcase with items you’ll need on the first day and night: toiletries, clean clothes, chargers, medications, snacks, and important documents. That way, you don’t have to open all the boxes straight away.
7. Arrange parking space
Request a temporary parking permit from your local council for the moving lift. This avoids fines and ensures the movers can load and unload as close to your door as possible.
8. Update your address
Don’t forget to notify the local council, your employer, insurances, subscriptions, and the Tax Office of your address change. Through verhuisservice.nl, you can partly automate this.
9. Take photos of electronics
Before you disconnect your TV, computer, or stereo setup: take photos of the cables and connections. That way, you’ll know exactly how to reconnect everything in your new home.
10. Take your time after the move
You don’t have to unpack everything on the first day. Start with the essential rooms (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom) and gradually unpack the rest over the following days. Also, take the time to enjoy your new surroundings.
