Don't forget a thing with your move. We've listed everything chronologically so you know exactly when to do what.
8 weeks before moving
- Confirm your moving date
- Request quotes from removal companies (minimum 3)
- Choose and book a removal company
- Request leave days at work
- Notify the council of your move (must be done within 5 days, but start preparations now)
- Cancel your tenancy agreement (note the notice period, usually 1 month)
6 weeks before moving
- Start unpacking: sort by room
- Order moving boxes and packing materials
- Inform schools and childcare providers
- Notify your GP, dentist and pharmacy of your address change
- Inform your energy supplier (end date of old address + start date of new)
- Transfer or set up new internet and TV subscriptions
4 weeks before moving
- Start packing non-essential rooms
- Apply for a parking permit for your removal van at the council
- Update your address with: employer, bank, insurers, Tax Office
- Send out moving notices/cards
- Arrange for post to be forwarded via PostNL (up to 1 year)
- Organise keys: extra keys for new home, handover schedule for old home
2 weeks before moving
- Record meter readings (gas, water, electricity) for both addresses
- Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer (plan meals ahead)
- Keep valuable items separate (jewellery, documents, laptop)
- Pack an emergency kit with essentials for day 1
- Take photos of electrical connections
- Inform your neighbours about the moving day
The day before moving
- Pack the last boxes
- Check all boxes are labelled
- Set aside valuable items and emergency kit
- Empty and unplug the fridge
- Check all windows and doors
- Take out the bins
Moving day
- Record meter readings at both addresses
- Meet the removals team and discuss the new home layout
- Bring plenty of drinks and snacks for everyone
- Check the old home: nothing forgotten? Leave it clean?
- Hand in keys at departure
1 week after moving
- Notify the council of your move (legal requirement within 5 working days)
- Submit meter readings to your energy supplier
- Check your mail is being forwarded correctly
- Take your time unpacking room by room
- Introduce yourself to your neighbours
