Moving from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom involves more than a longer drive. There are forms to fill in on both sides of the border, and the planning of a long-distance move works differently from a local one. This guide covers what you arrange yourself and what we take care of as your removal company.
Before you leave the Netherlands
- Make sure your right to live in the UK (visa or settled status) is arranged before you plan the move.
- Deregister with your Dutch municipality (gemeente) when you emigrate; its website explains from which date this is possible.
- Cancel or transfer energy, internet and your Dutch home insurance.
Customs: the UK is outside the EU
Since Brexit, household goods going to the UK cross a customs border. If you are moving your normal residence to the UK, you can apply for Transfer of Residence relief (form ToR1) with HMRC, which lets you import your belongings without paying import duty and VAT, subject to conditions. Apply before the move, and keep an inventory of what you are taking. Your goods cannot be cleared without the right paperwork.
The crossing
A move to the UK includes a ferry or tunnel crossing, which we include in the planning. Loading and delivery are usually on different days; we agree the dates in advance so you know when your belongings will arrive.
What an international move costs
International moves start from € 2.414 including VAT. The final price depends on the volume, the distance and the access at both addresses; after an inventory you receive a fixed price. Want extra help? Our packing service starts from € 599, and storage from € 103 per month.
Protecting your belongings
Transport is covered by an all-risk transport insurance. Pack fragile items well, or leave it to us: under our terms we are not liable for damage to fragile goods that we did not pack ourselves. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery.
What is fixed in your quote
- A quote is valid for 14 days. Once you accept it in writing, the agreed fixed price is binding; only extra work you ask for on the day itself can be charged separately.
- For moves above € 1.500 we may ask for a deposit of up to 30%. The invoice is due within 14 days.
- Cancelling up to 7 days before the moving day is free of charge.
- Transport is covered by an all-risk transport insurance. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery.
