Not every move goes smoothly from A to B. Sometimes there’s a gap between leaving your old home and moving into the new one. Or maybe everything doesn’t fit in your new place. In those cases, temporary storage is the solution.
When do you need storage?
- Transition period: Your old tenancy ends before you can move into the new home
- Renovation: The new property is being refurbished and isn’t ready for living
- Downsizing: You’re moving to a smaller home and need time to decide what to keep
- Separation: Temporary storage gives space to settle the property division calmly
- Abroad: You’re moving abroad temporarily and want to store your belongings
Types of storage
Storage container (at the removal company)
Your belongings are stored in a secure, locked container in a protected warehouse. Advantage: the removal company can load your items directly from the van into the container — no extra handling.
Self-storage (garage boxes)
You rent your own storage space and have 24/7 access. Handy if you need to collect or add items regularly. Disadvantage: you have to transport yourself to the storage location.
Third-party storage
Sometimes family or friends offer temporary space. Free, but beware of insurance: your household contents insurance usually doesn’t cover items stored elsewhere.
How much does storage cost?
Average prices for storage space in the Randstad:
- 2-3 m³ (size of a small room): €50 – €90 per month
- 5-8 m³ (size of an apartment): €90 – €160 per month
- 10-15 m³ (size of a family home): €150 – €250 per month
- 20+ m³ (large belongings): €200 – €350 per month
Storage tips
- Don’t use plastic bags — they trap moisture and cause mould
- Place furniture on pallets or wooden planks, not directly on the concrete floor
- Leave space for airflow between boxes and walls
- Don’t store food, plants or hazardous substances
- Make an inventory list of what you’re storing
