A piano is not just a piece of furniture. It is a precision instrument containing hundreds of taut strings, a cast-iron frame, and a delicate soundboard. Its weight ranges from 200 kg for a pianino to over 500 kg for a grand piano. Moving it yourself? That’s asking for trouble.
Why shouldn’t you move a piano yourself?
- Weight: An average piano weighs 250-350 kg. Without the right equipment and technique, you risk serious injury.
- Vulnerability: Shock, temperature changes, and moisture can permanently damage the tuning, mechanics, and sound quality.
- Dimensions: Pianos don’t fit through standard doorways. Often, door removal, or transport via a moving lift or balcony is required.
- Floor damage: Without piano wheel protection, a piano can leave deep scratches or dents in your parquet or laminate.
How do specialists move a piano?
Step 1: Inspection and planning
Before moving, we inspect the piano, the route (stairs, thresholds, corners) and access to both locations. Based on this, we determine if a moving lift is needed and how many people the team will consist of.
Step 2: Protection
The piano is fully wrapped in movement blankets and protective covers. The lid is locked, and the legs (on a grand piano) are disassembled and packed separately.
Step 3: Transport
Using specialist piano trucks and straps, we move the piano to the van. In the van, the piano is secured with straps to prevent shifting during transit.
Step 4: Placement and retuning
At the new location, we place the piano in the desired spot. After moving, we recommend letting the piano acclimatise for 2 to 4 weeks and then having it retuned by a piano tuner.
How much does piano transport cost?
Consider the following:
- Upright piano: €250 – €500
- Grand piano: €400 – €900
- Concert grand: from €800
Factors affecting the price: floor, stairs, distance and whether a moving lift is required.
