Start sorting early
After 30, 40, or 50 years in the same home, there’s a lot to sort through. Take your time (weeks, not days) to sort. Do it with family: recalling memories makes the process less painful—and sometimes even enjoyable.
Keep it manageable
Don’t tackle the whole house at once. Work room by room, cabinet by cabinet. Half an hour a day is enough if you start early. This prevents overwhelm and keeps the process under control.
Keep familiar items close
Make sure personal items—photos, favourite chair, familiar bedding—are unpacked first in the new home. This creates a sense of home straight away.
Assign a dedicated contact
Appoint a family member or care worker as a fixed point of contact for the removal company. This takes the practical details off the senior’s plate.
