The packing of moving boxes seems simple, but there's more to it than you might think. Poorly packed boxes lead to damage, back pain, and frustration when unpacking. With these professional packing tips, you'll keep everything safe.
The right materials
Invest in good packing materials. This saves you money in the long run as there will be less breakage:
- Strong moving boxes: use boxes specifically made for moving (double-wall cardboard). Supermarket banana boxes are often too flimsy.
- Packing paper: use white packing paper, not newspapers (the ink bleeds into porcelain and glass).
- Plastic wrap: for extra protection of fragile items.
- Tape: use wide packing tape, not masking tape.
The golden rules of professional packing
Rule 1: Heavy at the bottom, light on top
Always pack heavy items (books, plates) at the bottom of the box. Lighter items (clothes, towels) go on top. This keeps the box stable and protects the bottom.
Rule 2: Maximum 20 kg per box
A full book box can quickly weigh 25+ kg. So, only fill book boxes halfway and pad the rest with lighter material. Your back (and the movers) will thank you.
Rule 3: Fill empty space
Items that move in the box will break. Fill all empty space with packing paper, towels, or clothes. Gently shake the box: if nothing moves, it's packed well.
Rule 4: Plates vertically, glass individually
Pack plates on their side (like a tray), not stacked. Wrap each glass or cup individually in paper and place them upright in the box. Use dividers if you have them.
Room-by-room approach
Pack room by room and don't mix items from different rooms. Start with rooms you use least (bedroom, attic) and finish with the kitchen and bathroom.
Labelling like a pro
Write at least three things on each box:
- Which room the box belongs to
- What's generally inside
- If it's fragile (mark with "FRAGILE" and an arrow pointing to the top)
