Hiring a Moving Lift: When Is It Necessary?

A moving elevator saves time, back and wall. But when is it really necessary and what does it cost? All the facts in one place.

Tips 5 May 2026 5 min

A moving lift — also known as a furniture lift or ladder moving lift — is a lift that is placed against the facade of a building to transport heavy and large items directly through the window or balcony up or down. It is one of the most underrated tools for a move.

When is a moving lift needed?

A moving lift is recommended in the following situations:

  • Living above the 2nd floor: The more stairs, the more time and physical effort. From the 3rd floor, a lift is almost always more efficient.
  • Narrow staircase: In many older buildings, the staircases are too narrow for large furniture such as sofas, cabinets and beds.
  • Heavy items: Pianos, safes and heavy cabinets are safer via the moving lift than via narrow stairs.
  • No lift in the building: Apartments without an internal lift benefit most from an external lift.

How does a moving lift work?

The moving lift is assembled against the facade and reaches up to the correct floor level. Items are placed on a platform and mechanically transported up or down. The operation is in the hands of an experienced operator.

Assembly and disassembly take around 30-45 minutes. The lift can usually reach up to the 7th or 8th floor, depending on the type.

How much does a moving lift cost?

  • Half day (4 hours): €150 – €250
  • Full day (8 hours): €250 – €400

Including assembly, operation and disassembly. The price depends on the floor, accessibility and the season.

Does a moving lift save money?

That sounds contradictory, but yes. A moving lift costs €150-400, but saves 2-4 hours of work time for the moving team. At a rate of €50-70 per mover (x 2-3 men), the lift is quickly paid back. Moreover, there is less risk of damage to walls, door frames and stair treads.

Do I need a permit?

In most municipalities, you do not need a permit to place a moving lift, as long as it is only temporary (less than 24 hours). You will often need to apply for a temporary parking permit for the area directly in front of the building. Check this with your municipality.

Alternative: crane work

For extremely heavy items (pianos over 300 kg, safes), a moving lift may not have enough lifting capacity. In that case, crane work is used: a mini-crane that transports items up via a hook.
