Moving with Kids: How to Make It Fun

Moving with kids can be exciting but also stressful. With this approach, you can make the transition smooth—and maybe even fun.

Tips 15 March 2026 5 min

For adults, a move is already a big job, but for children, it can be even more overwhelming. They leave their familiar surroundings, school, and friends. With the right approach, you can make the transition much smoother.

Tell them in good time

Don’t surprise your children with a move at the last minute. Let them know at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance so they can get used to the idea. Explain why you’re moving and highlight the positives: a bigger room, a garden, or closer to grandma and grandpa.

Get kids involved in the process

Let children help where they can. Younger kids can pack their own toys into boxes. Older kids can help label boxes or choose the colour for their new room. The more involved they are, the more control they’ll feel.

Keep routines going

Try to keep fixed routines as long as possible: the same bedtime, the same meal times. Children thrive on predictability, especially during a time of change.

The moving day itself

On moving day, it’s smart to keep young kids with a trusted person — a grandparent, aunt, or good friend. That way, you can focus on the move and keep kids out of the way of heavy furniture and busy removal men.

Older kids (10+) often find it fun to help. Give them their own task, like watching over their room’s boxes.

Making the new home kid-friendly

Set up the kids’ room first. Put their bed in place, hang up their favourite posters or drawings, and lay out their favourite teddy. A familiar spot in a new home makes all the difference.

School and friends

If your kids are changing schools, contact the new one before the move. Ask if there’s a welcome day. Invite a new classmate over to play — that speeds up the settling-in process a lot.

Give it time

It’s normal for kids to be sad or moody in the first few weeks. Give them space to express their feelings and be patient. Most kids adjust fully within a few months.
