Moving abroad is a big adventure, but also a complex operation. Alongside the physical transport come administrative, legal and emotional challenges. In this guide, we’ll take you through all the steps.
Start at least 3 months in advance
An international move requires more preparation time than a domestic one. Plan at least 3 months ahead, and for distant destinations (outside Europe) even 4 to 6 months.
Sort out the paperwork
Unregister with your local council
If you’re moving abroad for longer than 8 months, you’ll need to unregister from the Central Population Register (BRP). This affects your healthcare, voting rights and tax obligations.
Healthcare
Within the EU, you can often use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Outside the EU, you’ll need international health insurance. Sort this out well in advance.
Taxes
Check with the Dutch Tax Office about your tax obligations after moving abroad. In many cases, you’ll remain partially taxable in the Netherlands, especially if you still have income or assets here.
Transporting your belongings
Within Europe
Moves within the EU are relatively straightforward: no customs formalities, free movement of goods. Transport is by lorry and takes, depending on the destination, 1 to 5 days.
Outside Europe
For destinations outside the EU, sea container transport comes into play. This takes 4 to 12 weeks. You’ll need an export declaration and customs rules apply in the destination country. A professional moving company with international experience will help you here.
What to take, what to leave behind
Transport costs abroad are higher than domestically. Make a critical selection:
- Take: personal items with emotional value, specific furniture you can’t easily replace
- Sell/store: large furniture that won’t fit in your new home, electronics with different voltage requirements
- Storage in the Netherlands: consider temporary storage if you’re not yet sure whether you’ll stay permanently
Taking your pets abroad
Within the EU, you’ll need an EU pet passport. Outside the EU, countries have different rules for vaccinations, chips and quarantine. Start planning this at least 3 months in advance.
The first weeks abroad
Make sure you have the basics sorted when you arrive: temporary accommodation, a local phone number, and access to your bank account. The rest will fall into place as your belongings arrive.
